Keane saves secure Leicester Women a cup bonus point after late equaliser

Leicester City Women earned a bonus point in the Subway Players Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout win at Southampton on Sunday 1 November 2026, after Paulina Nyström’s late header rescued a 1-1 draw.

Katie Keane stopped two Southampton penalties in the shootout at the Silverlake Stadium. The result brought Leicester a bonus point rather than a knockout victory, according to Southampton FC Official Site.

Nyström came on in the 70th minute and struck 17 minutes later, finding space at the far post to head in a corner. Her equaliser cancelled out Libbi McInnes’ 67th-minute opener, a deflected shot which wrong-footed Keane and crept over the line.

Keane had already kept Leicester level early on by saving Amy Goddard’s penalty in the 15th minute. She later tipped over a rising effort from Maria Edwards as Southampton sought to extend their lead.

Leicester also tested Southampton goalkeeper Alina Santos, who denied Poppy Pritchard before half-time and pushed away an Araya Dennis effort after the break.

In the shootout, Keane again denied Goddard and also saved Niamh Murphy’s attempt. Libby Bance missed for Leicester, but four successful spot-kicks secured the bonus. Edwards, Milly Mott and Rachel Brown converted for Southampton.
