£3.5m link between Leicester city centre squares moves forward

A new step-free route between Green Dragon Square and St Martin’s Square has moved closer after Leicester City Council approved the demolition of vacant shops at 12-20 Market Place.

The council-owned buildings would make way for a £3.5m scheme combining a pedestrian link with greenery, children’s adventure play and paved space that could accommodate temporary street food traders, BBC News reports.

The council previously said construction could begin in November, with the work expected to last about 12 months.

Just over £1m towards the project comes from a government grant intended to improve public transport in Leicester, according to the Labour-run council.

Leicester mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said the scheme offered a chance to complete a connection from Town Hall Square through to St Martin’s Square and towards Leicester’s Old Town. He also said it would provide more green space in the centre and somewhere for families to rest and play.
