Frog Island footpath and cycle path closed after roof debris falls
Highways officers cordoned off a Frog Island pavement and cycle path after roof debris fell from a derelict building on Saturday 24 October.
A pavement and cycle path beside a derelict building on Frog Island were cordoned off after strong winds sent roof debris onto the walkway on Saturday 24 October.
Highways officers closed the paths as a precaution, Leicester Mercury reports. Nobody was reported injured.
A passer-by spotted wooden roof planks and pieces of fascia falling from the building. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 4pm.
Firefighters consulted a Leicester City Council building inspector, sharing photographs of the damaged roof. After speaking to crews and examining the pictures, the inspector concluded there was no immediate danger of another collapse. Fire crews departed at 6.37pm.
Strong winds during Storm Boelo
The debris fell as Storm Boelo brought severe weather across the UK, following Storm Austen, which had affected southern and coastal areas.
Yellow wind warnings covered much of England, with warnings about airborne debris. Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England were under amber warnings, with gusts exceeding 80mph.
Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly advised people to allow for travel disruption and secure loose items outdoors.
Firefighters had attended several previous fires at the Frog Island building. Those blazes had gutted the structure and caused severe damage.
