Aldi sets demolition timetable for former Premier Inn on Narborough Road

Neighbours of the former Premier Inn at the junction of Narborough Road and Braunstone Lane East are being contacted about demolition work due to begin on Monday 2 November. Aldi says the main demolition phase should last around eight weeks, Leicester Mercury reports.

The retailer says it is contacting the closest households directly about the timetable and steps to limit noise, dust, vehicle movements and disruption. Internal stripping-out and preparation are already under way.

Two stages of clearance

Once the main demolition is complete, work to take out foundations and obstructions below ground is expected to start on Monday 4 January. That stage is expected to take around two weeks.

Aldi says clearing the vacant hotel will help prepare the site for its revised redevelopment proposals. The company has also pledged to keep residents updated as demolition progresses.

Store plans await a decision

A decision on Aldi’s revised planning application is expected by Wednesday 2 December. It seeks full permission to demolish the buildings, remove a legally protected tree and construct an Aldi supermarket.

The application also seeks agreement in principle for a coffee shop and residential care home, with detailed plans to follow.

Leicester City Council rejected the retailer’s original application in January, after it had been submitted the previous October. The council said that scheme presented an “unacceptable and significant risk” to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Neighbours have submitted more than 100 online comments on the revised proposals, including both support and objections.
